The vintage world is full of beautiful  surprises, so often we come across objects that irresistibly attract us and before which we are completely fascinated. Giving it a classification is completely impossible, it depends on many factors, any kind of affective memory would influence the result, but if classification had to be done Caferina would certainly be in the top places, because attributes are not lacking. 1961 was an extraordinary year: war times were forgotten, industrialization was making giant strides, and as if to make up for the difficult times gone by, the comfort of home was in the foreground, and many electrical appliances entered the house, it was the Vespa years. and the Cinquecento.  La Pavoni launches an authentic myth on the market: Europiccola , the miniature espresso coffee machine in bars, intended for domestic use.  The success was resounding: the quality was very high, the design was superior and it contributed enormously to adding people to his house. The mythical Europiccola is still   manufactures, also in the professional version,  and La Pavoni will do it for many  years old,   the world demand  remains huge, just take a look at the  Ebay, certainly with the improvements of the current technique, mainly in terms of security, but without a doubt with the same style of its creator, the excellence of the design made in Italy!!!,  which is a unique case of worldwide success... more than 50 years have passed!!!  At that time the   Caferina, with only a couple of years,  this one with the initials DP and date of 4  of 60,  ended  its brief life, so it is extremely rare, but it has transmitted  to the new star all its dna:  The   Europiccola, was  made to  your image and likeness!!!

But if you make a  coffee in a historic machine is always a pleasure, quality has to be guaranteed, and this Caferina has lots of limestone on its resistances and inside.

As you can see from the photos, they speak for themselves, it is not enough to clean it superficially, or to put any anti-limescale product on it, it will have to be opened for a deep and perfect cleaning; this happens with all machines, and if you suspect the quality of tap water, use bottled water.

The base of resistors has  various inscriptions: 200 and 600 watts, the power of the resistors, (  measuring the resistances with the ohmmeter, we have values of 170 and 75 Omhs and using Ohm's law gives us 1.3 and 2.9Ampers, so using the formula P=UxI gives us a slightly higher power those indicated); 4  60  (April 1960); PD  constructor; 220 volts. The minor resistance  is always on, the switch is only used to turn the largest on or off, so in terms of safety, some precautions must be taken: when not in use, it must be unplugged, and to make coffee, the switch must be at maximum , until steam comes out, at which point it should be set to the minimum, so it always requires the presence of an adult to supervise. To remove the resistors, if you do not have your own key, you can  make an ah-doc like the one in the photo, which is extremely easy, and works perfectly; it is highly recommended not to disconnect the connection wires at the resistors but at the other ends, due to the delicate part of the first ones, and some difficulty in  loosen the screws, subject to high temperatures for a long time  and very likely to break them.;  do not forget  to take some pictures, so that there are no mistakes during the assembly phase. If the base is to be chromed or enameled, disassembly must continue

when withdrawing  the safety valve, pay attention to the ball and spring that are inside, they must be replaced during the assembly phase. The boiler can be unscrewed from the base with a key identical to the one used to remove the resistors, but much more robust. Tens of years subject to heat, may still need  any anti-blocking product, as well as a little help from the hammer, and a small iron pin. The boiler can now be completely cleaned of limescale.

A very special care when removing the switch: as the   nut that holds it so thin, do not use any type of pliers, it does not hold it and only serves to damage it, so a lathe will be more indicated; to remove the handle from the handle, also use the vise to hold it firmly, with a protection to avoid scratches, and with a pipe wrench, unscrew the metal part.

Finally, the final part where the coffee comes out is dismantled and, as always, in the absence of an appropriate key, you can quickly make one just like the previous ones, just  differing in the distance between the screws, which are also a little sharpened at the point with the grinding wheel, and measuring M4 (the first were M6), as shown in the figure below, and behold, the machine housing is ready for the phase of chrome plating, along with all other parts  already dismantled. In the meantime buy all the seals  for the assembly phase. If you have any difficulties, you can buy them online.
